Coachella × Carpoolchella
Since 2007 Coachella has rewarded people who arrive at the festival by shared car. It isn't a fan initiative: it's run by the promoter itself, Goldenvoice, together with the nonprofit Global Inheritance.
How it works
Three rules and one prize
Arrive with 4 or more
Four people minimum in the car. Arriving on foot, by motorcycle or by public transport doesn't count.
A sign on the dashboard
Reading “Carpoolchella”, visible from outside. No need to decorate the car or register anywhere.
Get spotted
“Secret spotters” patrol the parking areas at random times and pick qualifying cars at random.
Headline prize
VIP for life
A VIP pass to one weekend of the festival every year, valued at $1,299 per person per year, for up to 6 people in the winning car.
Each weekend is a separate sweepstakes with a single prize of this kind: roughly two winning cars a year. The programme's power isn't in how many people win, but in how many take part just in case.
Why it works
It doesn't pay for the trip, it pays for the coordination
Coachella isn't subsidising anyone's journey: it gives four people who were already going a reason to agree on something before they leave home.
And that's where an event's traffic gets decided. By the time attendees reach the access road it's too late: travelling alone or together was decided days earlier, in a conversation the festival never sees.
Arrival isn't a logistics problem for the day of the event. It's part of the festival's offering.
The underlying data
The impact is on the road, not inside the venue
35-94%
of a festival's carbon footprint comes from audience travel
62%
of attendees at rural festivals arrive by private vehicle
A Greener Future, 2024 sustainability report, across 40 festivals in 16 countries. The more remote the site, the more weight the car carries and the harder it is to cover with collective transport alone.
What you can copy and what you can't
The incentive is replicable. The randomness isn't.
Coachella's model depends on someone spotting your sign in the car park. It works as a cultural gesture, but it generates no data, connects nobody, and doesn't help those who want to share a ride without knowing anyone else going.
What Coachella does
Rewards those who already coordinated on their own.
What VIB3S adds
Makes that coordination happen, even between strangers.
What Coachella doesn't get
Origin, occupancy, arrival peaks, CO₂ avoided.
What you do get
A dashboard with all of it, ready to plan and report.
And it isn't unique to Coachella: Roskilde, one of Europe's largest festivals, discounts parking for people arriving by shared car. The incentive changes, the idea is the same: reward those who don't come alone.
